Recently, Professor Michael Meadows, Honorary Professor of East  China Normal University (ECNU), Distinguished Professor in the ECNU  School of Geographical Sciences, and academician of the Royal Society of  South Africa, was officially elected as the new president of the  International Geographic Union (IGU), with a term of office from 2020 to  2024.

Founded in 1922, the IGU is the top international organization in  the field of geography, which is composed of geographical academic  groups from all over the world. The purposes of the IGU are primarily to  promote geography through initiating and coordinating geographical  research and teaching in all countries of the world. This is the first  time an employee of ECNU has served as chairman of an important  international geography academic organization.

此外,还任Progress  in Physical Geography, Quaternary Science Reviews及 Land Degradation and  Development等国际著名期刊的编委。

Born in 1955 in Liverpool, UK, Professor Michael Meadows obtained  his BA and PhD from the University of Sussex and the University of  Cambridge respectively. He began to work at the University of Cape Town  in 1983 and is currently the only academician of the Royal Society of  South Africa in physical geography.
Professor Meadows has published more than a hundred academic  papers in prestigious international journals, and several monographs.  Hehas served as the Secretary-General and Treasurer of the IGU since  2010. He is also on the editorial board of several high-profile  international journals, including Progress in Physical Geography,  Quaternary Science Reviews, and Land Degradation and Development.

WORKING IN ECNU

Professor Meadows visited ECNU for the first time on November 4,  2015. He was there to attend the “Population Geography and the Future of  Urbanization in China: Symposium for Commemorating the 80th Anniversary  of the Discovery of Hu Huanyong Line” hosted by ECNU, and delivered a  speech at the symposium.

In 2016, Professor Meadows became a distinguished professor in the  School of Geographical Sciences, East China Normal University. His key  research interests include the reconstruction of quaternary  palaeoenvironments and issues around environmental change and human  activities.

On April 14, 2017, the Opening Ceremony of the Institute of  Eco-Chongming and the Institute of Atmospheric and Earth System Sciences  & the Chongming Summit Forum on Ecological Development was held in  Chongming. Professor Meadows and other participants witnessed the birth  of the two institutes.

In 2017, Professor Meadows and Professor Liu Min’s scientific  program, Hydro-sediment dynamics  and bio geochemistry process in  coastal wetland critical zone :A comparison study  between China and  South Africa, was approved by the National Natural Science Foundation  of China and the National Research Foundation of South Africa as an  international cooperation program.
In April 2018, an ECNU research team headed by Professor Liu Min  and Professor Meadows conducted monitoring and fieldwork at Knysna  lagoon in South Africa.

On the recommendation of Professor Meadows, Professor David  Thomas from the Department of Geography and the Environment at the  University of Oxford, a renowned expert in the field of geological  geomorphology, visited the School of Geographic Sciences of ECNU in  December 2018. The visit promoted cooperation between the School of  Geographic Sciences of ECNU and the Department of Geography and the  Environment at the University of Oxford in joint student cultivation,  academic exchanges, and scientific and research collaboration.

In early 2020, he and academician Fu Bojie, also an  authority in geography, published a paper in Science Bulletin, proposing  scientific suggestions on the global control of the pandemic from the  geological perspective.
In view of the outstanding contributions Professor Meadows has  made in promoting international cooperation and enhancing the  international influence of China's geography in recent years, the  Geographical Society of China (GSC) has decided to  grant Professor  Meadows the Award for outstanding contribution to the Chinese  Geographical Society (International Cooperation) at the meeting to  commemorate its 110th Anniversary.
